Theresa slipped her arms around Brad’s waist as he pulled her closer. His lips were soft and warm and absolutely thrilling. Theresa melted into the kiss, savoring every moment.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Dang. An annoying sound was invading the purity of her make-out session.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Brad pulled away. “Is that your phone, Tessa?”

“Tessa?” Double oops. One little kiss shouldn’t have made her forget her alias. “I mean, yeah. Yes!” She stepped out of Brad’s arms and dug her phone out of the small handbag she had brought on the date. The text was clear: 911. So much for smooching. She had to get back to HQ double-quick.

“Uh-oh, I gotta leave,” Theresa told Brad.

“Why?” Brad was staring at her intently, arousing suspicion once again.

“It’s my, uh, cat again. My roommate and I have a special cat-alert code.” Theresa slipped on her jacket and smiled ruefully at Brad. “Sorry to kiss and run . . .” And she was even sorrier that she wouldn’t be seeing him again. By this time tomorrow she would be halfway across the country.

“I’ll walk you out,” Brad offered, holding out his arm to Theresa.

“Thank you, kind sir.”

Theresa followed Brad out of the office, thinking about their date from start to finish. The guy was too sweet to be evil. There was just no way that Brad was anything but a cute, semiclueless, but very endearing computer geek who was being used by Rosebud as some kind of weird pawn.

The trip to the ground floor of FutureWorks passed in a blur. Now that Theresa had recovered from Brad’s spine-tingling kiss, her thoughts had turned to Jo and Caylin. What was the emergency? Cops? Rosebud? Well, whatever the problem was, they would handle it. Now that Theresa had possession of the mission-completing information, they were home free.

Theresa trailed Brad out of the building, admiring the way his strong, broad back moved. It was too bad that ending the mission meant ending her romantic dalliance, but such was the life of a Spy Girl.

“Hello, kids.” A dark figure stepped out of the shadows, blocking Brad and Theresa’s path. “Nice evening, isn’t it?”

A dangerous chill traveled down the length of Theresa’s spine—significantly less pleasant than the chill she had felt in Brad’s arms. Even in the dim light of the street she recognized Rosebud’s face. There was no doubt that if he turned around, she would see the small, red tattoo on the back of his neck.

“What do you want?” Brad asked. “We were just leaving.”

Rosebud sneered. “I want the disc, Brad.” He paused, looking from Theresa to Brad to Theresa. “I believe you have it. And I want it now.”

Brad stepped forward, blocking Theresa from Rosebud’s view. “I don’t have any disc, Simon,” he said. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Rosebud laughed. “Yeah, right. There’s no way you resisted going into the Monkey Room with that info I gave you today, geek. Why else would you be here late at night?”

“Tessa left her house keys in the office,” Brad said. “Now I’d appreciate it if you got out of our way.
