Chapter Fifteen

Iliana and I walked down the hallway.

“You know,” she said. “I do not expect you to call me Mom. That’s Patty, and I am glad for you, and for her. She loves you as a mother should.”

I stopped, putting a hand on her arm. “You don’t have to do this,” I said. I wasn’t sure, but I thought I might know where she was going.

“No, I do. I want to have a relationship with you. It may take some time. I would like… “ she stopped. Iliana took a breath and started again. “I would like you to call me something else.”

“Like what?” I asked.

“Mána,” she said.

“What does it mean?”

“It’s a term for a mother figure in Greek,” Iliana said. “You might want to consider learning Greek, by the way.”

Whatever I was about to say was cut off by the appearance of Madame Karathos. “Oh! Ladies, I didn’t realize you were still chatting. Are you finished?”

“We are,” I said. “Thank you for the privacy.”

“Well, your mother was most insistent that you be allowed to speak somewhere secluded.” Madame Karathos nodded.

“Thank you,” Iliana added.

“Of course. And I will be happy to escort you to our portal room,” she said to Iliana. “The school can be confusing for people who are not familiar with it.”

“Thank you, that would be most kind,” Iliana said. She turned to me. “Thank you for meeting with me, Olivia.”

I nodded, the lump in my throat making it too difficult to speak.

“Oh, Miss Washington, will you wait for me here?” Madame Karathos said over her shoulder as she was leaving with Iliana. “I won’t be long.”

“Of course,” I said, sitting down in a chair in front of the desk.

Leaning back, I looked around the office. Rows of bookcases, filled to the brim. Some of the books looked very old.

There were pictures behind Madame Karathos’ desk. The bookcases came up to just outside the width of the desk, and I was dying to go and look at the pictures. Some were painted, some were black and white photos. But something stopped me.

As I debated how much time I had to snoop, the door from the hallway opened and Madame Karathos came back in.

“Madame,” I got out as I stood up.

She came to me swiftly, her hand gripping my arm with surprising strength. “Miss Washington, you have not been honest with me.”

“Shit,” I said, startled into cussing.

“Indeed. Now,” Madame Karathos let go of my hand. “It is time for truths. Who are you, really, Miss Washington?”

I wondered if I’d be able to call my parents before she called the Concilium.

“I am who you think I am,” I said.

“But I believe there is more,” Madame Karathos said.

“You’re right,” I sat back down. “There is.”

“Who was that woman?” she asked.

“What are you going to do with me?” I asked in response.

“That depends on what you’re going to tell me.”

I studied her. “But you already know,” I said softly. “You know what Iliana is.”

“I know who she is,” Madame Karathos replied, equally soft.
