Chapter Four: Noah

The sounds of seagulls squawking nearby and a pounding headache cause me to toss and turn in bed this morning. With my eyes still closed, I hold my palm to my forehead as I take a deep breath.

“Ugh,” I grunt as I rub my head.

I can’t recall how I ended up drinking so much last night but regardless, I feel like crap this morning. The events of yesterday whirl through my mind. I know there was a flight, a storm, a bar, and a woman.

Was it all a dream? My eyes open wide and my body jolts as I quickly turn my head to see if Noelle is here.

There she is next to me, a perfect sleeping beauty. She is just as stunning this morning as she was when I first saw her.

A sudden panic runs through my mind, as I frantically I feel for my shirt and pants. My clothes are on and I lift the blanket to find that Noelle is also fully clothed.

A wave of relief washes over me, no sex involved last night.

Of course, I’d love nothing more than to satisfy this amazing woman. But a woman like her deserves more than just a night of casual drunk sex. Our first time together will be special, and I’ll make sure of that.

I look up and catch a glimpse of the clock on the wall. If the time is accurate, I’ve missed my deadline. But for some reason I feel no anger and no panic.

I gently graze my hand through Noelle’s hair as she lays there so peacefully and for the first time in a long time, I feel calm.

Noelle makes me want to make some serious changes in my life, starting with her as my priority. Trying not to wake my sleeping queen, I carefully get out of bed and grab my phone.

I step outside and dial my boss.

“Hey Martin, it’s Noah,” I say. But those are the only words I manage to get out as Martin starts shouting.

“Noah,” my boss yells at me. “You missed the deadline, do you realize where that puts us? We—,” I hold the phone away from my ear as he continues shouting.

Sure, he’s mad right now. Missing a deadline is Martin’s idea of a nightmare. But he’s really going to fill with rage after I say what I need to.

“Are you listening to me, Noah?” he shouts after ranting for countless minutes.

“Martin,” I say calmly. “I quit.”

A quick pause then Martin fires back, “What do you mean you quit? You can’t quit. What else would you do?”

“I’ve changed my priorities and I’m going to open up my own practice,” I say confidently. “I appreciate all the opportunities I’ve had at your firm but it’s time for me to move on.”

With my head held high, I shower him with gratitude being the bigger person during this conversation.

“Noah, if you leave you can’t come back,” Martin says. “You’re going to regret—.”

“Oh, and Merry Christmas, Sir,” I say cutting him off before hanging up the phone.
