Miyamoto expresses the progress of the two companies this way. “I think there are a lot of things we have in common—I think both companies are extremely good at predicting how their customers will react. I guess I shouldn’t say that about my own company, though. But yes, I think we’re quite conscious of such things, and both [Nintendo and Apple] do their business with an acute sense of what will go over well.”

Incidentally, Iwata is an Apple fan of 20 years. He’s had his beloved MacBook for ages and uses the same presentation software that Steve Jobs uses—Keynote—to prepare his balance sheet materials. He’s used an iPod since the very first model and has purchased every new iteration to the bemusement of those around him. And of course, he has an iPhone.

Yet Iwata doesn’t forget to emphasize one difference between the two companies.

“We’ve done all sorts of things to play to our strengths, to paint a bright future for ourselves, and in the end people have started to say, ‘Wow, Nintendo’s a lot like Apple.’ But we’re an amusement company, and Apple’s a tech company. There are lots of differences that arise from that.”

Amusement and technology—put another way, one makes toys, and the other makes appliances. It’s hard to get along these days without a computer. Likewise a cell phone. And though a portable music player may technically be for amusement, many people consider them indispensable.

But you don’t need a videogame console to live. It’s not the kind of thing that’s meant to make your daily life more convenient. With PCs able to play videogames at home, and iPods and cell phones doubling as game machines on the go, dedicated game systems are becoming less necessary every year.

It is this circumstance that Nintendo has been confronting and fighting.

It is for this reason—and with pride—that Iwata ultimately concludes that “there are lots of differences.”
