“Why didn’t you pick him up?”

“I forgot.”

“On purpose.”

“Enough,” Auntie Dee says. “We have Bear now. So let’s be happy.”

Back in the car, Auntie Dee places Bear between Nikki and Deja on the back seat along with her lamp.

“Homeward bound,” she says.

Nikki and Deja say nothing to each other all the way home. Each looks out her own window instead.

Finally, they reach Fulton Street. Auntie Dee parks the car and reaches into the back seat for her lamp. “Come on,” she says. Nikki and Deja climb out of the car. Deja runs up the stairs with all of her bags and Bear. She doesn’t look back. Nikki watches her for a few seconds, then climbs the stairs to her own house and goes inside.
