With Tsukiha by my side, I shuffled my way to the subway and rode it to Ohori Park Station. I struggled up the steps, one swing of the crutches at a time, and surfaced by the park grounds. Even at this late at night, crowds of people continued swarming in, probably to go for a jog or cycle laps around the place or grab a coffee at the Starbucks. The sweet savory smell of pastries from a Mister Donut filled my nostrils and made my mouth water. My stomach growled again. I was starving. No time for a late-night snack, though.

We came to a fairly ritzy apartment complex in the middle of a quiet residential area. The warm orange glow of streetlights shone on a zen rock garden out in front.

“Whew,” the fox girl whistled. “Nice place for a guy who just started at the bottom of the totem pole.”

Ishikawa lived in Room 202, same as Tobisaki. My partner pressed the elevator button and held the door for me as I slowly got in. We hurried along the second floor walkway and came to the officer’s apartment.

“Officer Ishikawa?” I said as I knocked. “You in there? This is Ryūsei Uchida. I’ve got some things I’d like to ask you if that’s all right.”

No answer.

“That figures,” Tsukiha scoffed. “They always gotta make it harder on ya. It’d be so much easier if they’d just come to the door.”

I tried again. “Officer Ishikawa? Hello? Please answer me. I’m not looking to start anything, I promise. I just want to figure out what’s going on.”

Still nothing. Tsukiha grabbed the doorknob and gave it a twist.

“Hey, it’s unlocked.”

“Oh, geez, not again. I’m not sure I’m ready to find another dead body.”

“But you just saw the guy, right? Doesn’t seem like he’s dead to me.”

“You’ve got a point there. Time to trespass yet again, it looks like.”

The inside was every bit as spartan and meticulously organized as Tobisaki’s place. Same type of furniture in the same locations, arranged in a nearly identical fashion. A sickly smell hung in the air.

“Gotta say,” I began as I hurled myself forward, “it seems like that monster was telling the truth. This apartment looks pretty much exactly the same as Tobisaki’s did.”

“I don’t get it, though…how can they be the same person? Tobisaki’s body was missin’ its head. Maybe that was the flyin’ face I fought. But that cop you spoke to had a head and body and everythin’.”

“I’m not quite sure I understand it, either. Just a gut feeling I have. I suspect we’ll find something that’ll help us piece this case together.”

That “something” turned out to be way more than I’d bargained for. Tsukiha screamed at the sight of another body on the living room floor. Just like Tobisaki’s corpse, this one was missing its head and lying on its stomach. However, there was a crucial difference this time, and that difference threw me for a loop so hard I almost choked on my gasp. And then I almost choked on vomit from the gruesome scene that lay before me.
