Keep Your Feet off the Seat

Once Eziel shut the metal floor door, he pressed the lock icon on the digital keypad, sealing the prisoners in. The only way out was an electronic keypad sequence or getting past the guard outside the basement door that led to the sewer. They were going nowhere.

“Sage,” Eziel said, “what news have you?”

When Eziel stood toe to toe with Sage, his head met Sage’s chest. Eziel never felt the need to make eye contact with his minions unless he meant to intimidate. Sage had been a loyal worker for the front shop since before Eziel came along, so as much as he could trust a Codan, he trusted Sage. Another fake name but one the other Codans at the shop had given him.

“We have him, sir.”

Eziel steepled his fingers and watched congested traffic out the window. “I heard.”

“He didn’t even change his appearance and was spotted only blocks away from here.”

Eziel continued to stare out the window. “Yesss, he is coming into his own, and he doesn’t know it yet.”

“Pardon, sir, but it seems… unwise.”

“It does, at first, but you need to put your feet in Boston’s shoes. He’s not running anymore, Sage. He’s likely to come straight at us, and I mean to ensure that happens.”

A bandsaw whirred to life in the backroom. Likely Jeffries, the other front man, pudgy, sweaty, and lazy. Eziel cared nothing for him and would end him when the time came. And the time was near.

“Sir?” Sage asked.

Eziel walked up to the counter and put his hands on it. “You’re a smart man, wouldn’t you say?”

“I like to think so, sir.”

“I want you on the front lines from now on. This shop will not be needed much longer. The Engineer has assured me his work is near completion.” Eziel thumbed in the direction of the bandsaw. “Jeffries can watch everything from now on.”

Sage smiled. “Yes, sir. Thank you. I have been waiting for this moment, training for this.”

“I know it. The team has the details. You’re the only one I want talking with him. None of those other knuckleheads are to approach him or Senna. And under no circumstances do any one of you touch the ring, even if he offers it to you. Understand?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I don’t doubt your sincerity, but be assured, he will beg you when the time comes, and make no mistake about it: He is no coward. Do not underestimate his hatred.”

“I will not, sir. He won’t see this coming.”

Eziel nodded. “Let’s hope not, because you won’t see what’s coming if he does.”

“Sir, the money his father stole from us cannot be forgiven.”

“Yes, yes, your precious money. Seems none of you can ever get enough, even with all the money you have stolen over the years. And you’re positive he is the son?”

“No question. The ring you described was a cherished item amongst this group long before I came along. A good-luck piece, I should say.”

If they only knew what they had. Eziel’s thoughts wandered back to when he joined the cult of idiots.
