Racial/Ethnic Bias

Hispanic/Latino immigrants in the US may be subject to stigmatization, social marginalization, racism, and discrimination because of their appearance, language use, the kinds of work they do, and their known or perceived status as immigrants, whether documented or undocumented. These processes may also make it difficult for them to gain access to any number of resources they and their families need for their well-being, including health-related services. Implicit and explicit biases among healthcare providers as manifested in, for example, perceptions, values, and verbal behavior during patient-provider interactions, can also negatively affect their contacts with Hispanic/Latino immigrants, creating barriers to health care delivery at the provider-patient interface and contributing to negative health outcomes for immigrants. Research has been limited concerning the effects of implicit provider bias and actions on Hispanic/Latino immigrants’ health care outcomes over time (Hall et al., 2015; Martinez et al., 2017).
