y elation at finding Smee and leads on Neverland was being dampened by the wretched feeling in my gut about Sarah. All I could think about was what I could have done differently to prevent this outcome. What could I have done to make Sarah love Elise so we could have been a real family? Sarah told me when I asked what kind of job she would have wanted that she would want to be surrounded by children. That was why I believed her when she said she was broken because she couldn’t have anymore.

Sarah loved me so much. Why couldn’t she give some of that love to Elise? I was hardly touching my breakfast, and I hadn’t realized Smee had come stumbling in rubbing the sleep from his eyes. I had a plate waiting for him.

“The food here is so strange. On Neverland, we just think what we want to eat, and it appears. I could eat pastries at every meal if I wanted. Here, those cost a lot of coin at a bakery, and the food at the tavern tastes like slop.”

“What have you been doing for money, Smee?”

“Shoveling shit. It’s the only thing I know how to do.”

“You won’t need to do that anymore. What do you know about Cannibal’s Cove and an island with a rock with a fiery skull on it?”

“I know all about Cannibal’s Cove and Skull Rock. What I want to know is how you know about them since I haven’t told you.”

“I had a dream last night. I saw Cannibal’s Cove and Skull Rock. They are important. Before I could see why, my wife woke me up. I’m sure you heard the screaming.”

“Did you kill her? That was the noise Piggy made when Peter was stabbing him after he grew up.”

“What kinds of names are Piggy and Smee?”

Smee just shrugged. “Peter names us since we don’t know our real names. We don’t question Peter. I didn’t until I saw him kill Piggy. I knew when it was my turn to grow up, I’d be next. I didn’t just grab Tink’s fairy dust the night I grew up. I’d been stealing it the entire time. That’s why I have so much. Only Peter knows the way to and from Neverland, but I knew there was a way. I stole enough so I could eventually find a place to live.”

“I didn’t kill my wife. I took her home to her father. She was a danger to you, and she would have been a danger to Elise if I can get her back.”

“I could hear everything. Why did she want me to make her scream? She was doing a pretty good job keeping me awake with her yelling without me.”

“I promise, I will explain all that at a better time. What can you tell me of Cannibal’s Cove and Skull Rock?”

“Peter doesn’t go there often. It’s not fun to play there. He won’t tell us who set them, but there are traps all over Cannibal’s Cove that not even Peter wants to mess with.
