Chapter 12

After the day we’d had, and then putting down a big meal that started out with a very large T-bone steak, I was ready to rest. We went back to the Wagon Wheel and to our room, and I had just stretched out on the bed when my phone rang.

It was Alfie, so I put it on speaker as I answered. “Hey, Alfie,” I said. “Did you find anything?”

“Did I ever,” he said. “You are aware that the FBI has taken over the investigation into Harold Logan, right?”

I sighed. “Yes, we know,” I said. “Now, what did you find out?”

“I was just asking. I mean, technically, if I find anything that actually could lead to discovering his whereabouts, I really should be turning it over to the FBI. I probably shouldn’t tell you about it at all, you know that, right?”

“Is the FBI going to pay you for the information?” I asked.

“Which is why I could give a flying fig what the FBI thinks,” he said. “Okay, princess, here’s what we got. That number definitely goes to a burner phone, but it seems to belong to an idiot. Most people, if they use a burner to try to keep anyone from knowing who they really are, they turn off the GPS features of the phone, but not this guy. As a result, I was able to go through its location history. That didn’t take very long, because it’s only been in a very few locations, and one of them is where it’s been for the last several months, without moving.”

“Really?” I asked excitedly. “Could you nail down where that is?”

“Geez, princess, you’re talking to me, remember? For more than seven months, that phone was completely stationary in the office of one David Garibaldi, Attorney at Law in Casper, Wyoming. Want the address?”

“Hell, yes,” I said. “What is it?”

“Check your text messages, I sent it to you a couple of minutes ago. And before you ask, I’ve been doing some deep background on Garibaldi, and guess what I found out.”

“A connection between him and Logan?”

“And the lady wins the banana! They happen to be old Army buddies, served in the same unit. When I went back through some of Logan’s communications, I found out that he had been calling Garibaldi regularly for more than a year, right up to the time he disappeared.”

“I’m just wondering, but why didn’t you notice that before?” I asked. “You went through his phone calls the first time we talked about him.”

“At the time, I was looking for a local mistress, remember? Not a lawyer that he might have discussed a plan to disappear with. Give me a break, I deserve one.”

“So what did you find out about Garibaldi, himself? Is this a man who might be dangerous?”

“He’s a sleazeball lawyer,” Alfie said, “and I’m not saying that the way I talk about most lawyers. This guy is a shyster, the lowest of the low. He doesn’t handle many cases personally, but he gets called
