Chapter 12
After the day weâd had, and then putting down a big meal that started out with a very large T-bone steak, I was ready to rest. We went back to the Wagon Wheel and to our room, and I had just stretched out on the bed when my phone rang.
It was Alfie, so I put it on speaker as I answered. âHey, Alfie,â I said. âDid you find anything?â
âDid I ever,â he said. âYou are aware that the FBI has taken over the investigation into Harold Logan, right?â
I sighed. âYes, we know,â I said. âNow, what did you find out?â
âI was just asking. I mean, technically, if I find anything that actually could lead to discovering his whereabouts, I really should be turning it over to the FBI. I probably shouldnât tell you about it at all, you know that, right?â
âIs the FBI going to pay you for the information?â I asked.
âWhich is why I could give a flying fig what the FBI thinks,â he said. âOkay, princess, hereâs what we got. That number definitely goes to a burner phone, but it seems to belong to an idiot. Most people, if they use a burner to try to keep anyone from knowing who they really are, they turn off the GPS features of the phone, but not this guy. As a result, I was able to go through its location history. That didnât take very long, because itâs only been in a very few locations, and one of them is where itâs been for the last several months, without moving.â
âReally?â I asked excitedly. âCould you nail down where that is?â
âGeez, princess, youâre talking to me, remember? For more than seven months, that phone was completely stationary in the office of one David Garibaldi, Attorney at Law in Casper, Wyoming. Want the address?â
âHell, yes,â I said. âWhat is it?â
âCheck your text messages, I sent it to you a couple of minutes ago. And before you ask, Iâve been doing some deep background on Garibaldi, and guess what I found out.â
âA connection between him and Logan?â
âAnd the lady wins the banana! They happen to be old Army buddies, served in the same unit. When I went back through some of Loganâs communications, I found out that he had been calling Garibaldi regularly for more than a year, right up to the time he disappeared.â
âIâm just wondering, but why didnât you notice that before?â I asked. âYou went through his phone calls the first time we talked about him.â
âAt the time, I was looking for a local mistress, remember? Not a lawyer that he might have discussed a plan to disappear with. Give me a break, I deserve one.â
âSo what did you find out about Garibaldi, himself? Is this a man who might be dangerous?â
âHeâs a sleazeball lawyer,â Alfie said, âand Iâm not saying that the way I talk about most lawyers. This guy is a shyster, the lowest of the low. He doesnât handle many cases personally, but he gets called
