Chapter 25

I guessed I wouldn’t be following Matthews around tonight, after all.

My first instinct was to head down to the police station. The officers would be in a mournful panic. Lily was shaken up. Things were hitting too close to home now, especially for her. She gave me no details, but I still assumed this was tied to the cartel.

Lily insisted I stay away from the station. Emotions and tensions were high. And she had no idea how the other officers would react to my presence at such a vulnerable moment.

Mayor Reece was planning to deliver an official statement at an impromptu press conference outside of city hall at the top of the hour. This would be my first chance to see him in action.

I returned to my car, unzipped my backpack, and confirmed my gun was loaded. It felt like something could happen at any moment. When a small town’s police chief is killed on the job—as I assumed was the case—the citizens tend to hide inside until life feels normal again. If it’s not safe for the chief of police to roam around town, then why should they?

I drove back across Hillcrest. City hall was in the same neighborhood as the police station, so I had to pass Hamburger Stand on my way, where business continued as usual.

Still had a hard time knowing my nephew was in there working for the bad guys.

The press conference was to begin at five o’clock. I pulled up to a mob of people already formed at 4:40. About three hundred, if I had to guess. Parking was already impossible to find along Hillcrest Avenue, so I had to drive a couple of blocks away and walk over.

Several others were doing the same, as we parked in a quiet neighborhood and made our way to city hall. By the time I joined the crowd, it had already swelled to four hundred people.

Some people were sobbing, tears streaming down their faces. Most others were talking in hushed tones to each other, speculating about what had happened. News spread fast in this town, apparently.

I wanted a good view of the mayor, so pushed my way toward the front of the crowd. There were fences in place to serve as barriers, a handful of police officers standing with their arms crossed, assault rifles held at the ready. All were wearing sunglasses, likely to hide their sorrow or fear.

I recognized a heavyset man standing in the front row, his belly pressed up against the barrier.

Theo Rambis, the reporter from the Hillcrest Daily who had written at least eighty percent of the articles I’d read over the past couple of days. With his sheer volume of published articles, he was the main reporter in town. His front row spot for the press conference only confirmed that.

I wanted to talk to him but wasn’t even sure what to say. What if he knew I was the person of interest they had arrested after the shooting at the tavern? The last thing I needed was my face or name to show up in a local paper.
