A cool breeze ripples through the space as I step in through the door. The white curtains around the door billow, letting me know exactly where my father went. With quiet feet, I pad my way barefoot through the beautiful apartment space and head out to the balcony.

My father stands there with his hands on the rail, just looking out over the incredible surroundings.

“Don’t look so serious,” I joke. “You’ll get wrinkles.”

His eyes slide over to me and he chuckles. I stand beside him, mirroring his position. Together, we look out over the City of Nero.

Spires of the tower rise up around us, jutting toward the sky. But down below, I can see the bridges. I see the homes in the valley below. There are lights on in most of them. Dusk has just fallen and the sky is cast in a brilliant hue of orange and purple.

Words from their King, that’s all it took to calm the population of Glorra Quin Lune. For them, just hours ago, they were in a state of emergency. They were all rallying together to stop Cyrillius from taking their princess. And then it was just…over. I was back. They learned twenty solars had slipped by.

“I don’t know how they can be so calm,” I say, speaking my mind.

“I don’t think they really are,” my father says, looking over the homes. “But what can they do? Time has moved on, there is no immediate threat. In many ways, this doesn’t affect them at all. They don’t deal with the rest of the galaxy. So, for them, the only thing that has changed, is you.”

I shake my head and my stomach knots with an anxious cramp. “I feel like I’m in a fairy tale. None of it feels real. It doesn’t…connect.”

“For me, it’s like I’ve been in the fairy tale for twenty solars already,” he says. “You were just a blind character. Now your eyes have been opened to your role.”

“You’ll stay, right? You know that no matter what, even though I’ve met them now, you’re always going to be my dad. That’s never, ever going to change.” I look over at him, studying his aging face.

He looks over at me, and he just studies me for a long time. I think I see a small trace of grief in his eyes. For solars, he thought my parents were dead. That there was no chance of reuniting with them. So I was his, one hundred percent.

And now that isn’t the case.

“You are my father,” I say the words again, slow, hard, confident.

He gives me a little smile, and then pulls me into his chest. He wraps familiar arms around me, cradling my head against his chest with a familiar hand.

I’m a grown woman now, living her own life. But I still need my dad.

“Of course I’ll stay,” he says. “No matter what, as long as you want me.”

“Then that’s going to be forever,” I say, looping my arms around his waist and hugging him tight. “I love you always.
