Chapter Seventeen
I awoke with my head feeling like someone played basketball with it for two hours. My body was lying on something soft, probably a bed since I was clearly in someoneâs room. I got up, slowly, trying my best not to make the pain worse than it was.
Touching the back of my head where I got socked turned out to be a bad idea. The hair there had grown stiff, likely when the blood that spilled out had dried. Looking at my hands confirmed it, dried blood mixed with bits of pebbles and dirt. It was like someone whacked me in the head with a piece of the earth. Might explain why I went down so fast; wind was weak against earth. The cop that hit me was a magic user, attuned to earth.
I examined the room I was in, finding all the standard shit youâd see in someoneâs bedroom: dressers, nightstands, and a window peering out into the winter wonderland outside. It was still dark, meaning not that much time had passed, though it looked like the blizzard was in full effect, turning the streets below white, and burying dozens of parked cars in the process.
So, someone knocked me out, and then dragged me to their apartment. And Brianna was cool with it? Not fucking likely, she might have died when I got the lightning whip on her. She made it crystal clear I wasnât allowed to live on her watch. Getting the nice bed treatment to recover made no sense.
âWakey, wakey,â said the voice of a man behind me.
Slowly, I faced the opposite end of the bedroom, while crawling on the bed. A man sat at a chair in the corner next to a small table. On the table were parts to his gun, his hands working to clean and put it back together. He had short black hair and tanned skin and must have been in his mid-thirties. Oh, and get this, he had an FBI jacket on.
But ⦠he didnât want me dead. Hell, he took the time to smile at my awakening.
âYouâre doing a very bad job at killing me,â I said to him.
âIs that how you thank everyone that didnât?â he snorted.
I had to double-check to make sure I had no cuffs on my wrists, and that I was really in someoneâs bedroom, most likely his. There was none of that shit, so the blow to my head didnât make me imagine this.
âExactly how many laws are you breaking right now?â I asked.
He shrugged as he finished cleaning and putting his pistol back together. âThe fuck if I know, not an expert at that shit, my host may be, but I havenât spent much time in this body.â
There we go. The use of the word âhost.â He was possessed. But by who? I went to scan him, and it gave me a small headache. My second attempt at scanning showed the energy signatures of Lux coming from his body. And a small hint of Umbral, it was hard to see at first, but it was there.
