Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Born March 6, 1806, in Durham, England, Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the oldest of eleven children. Although her father was wealthy, she lived in a time when daughters were not allowed an education. She joined her brothersâ tutored lessons, and she taught herself. By the age of twelve, she read classics, wrote poems, and studied languages. At age fifteen, perhaps from a spinal injury, she suffered the first of many illnesses. She was twenty-two when her mother died. She lived under her fatherâs loving but stern care. Frail and in poor health, she had anxiety and weak lungs. For some reason, her father forbade his daughter to marry. She stayed in her room and did little but read and write.
