Jack kept his head down, facing the bar, his back to the room. It was taking all his willpower not to turn around and stare at Chen, but he made do with the occasional glance in the reflection of the mirrored sunglasses heâd placed on the bar. It was risky to be here at all, given how easily heâd be recognized by Tipping, but Jack had been unwilling to let Chen fly solo. There was too much at stake.
They were in the Vox Bar of the Grand Hyatt in Berlin, which boasted 300 whiskies that Jack wished he had the time to sample. Chen was posing as a New York Standard reporter and waiting for Tipping to appear while Jack, for his part, was seated at the far end of the bar. He occasionally sipped his whisky, but was taking it easy because he needed to keep a clear head.
âShow time.â Jack kept his voice soft as he spied Tipping approaching Chen in the reflection of the sunglasses.
Tipping looked sharp, suited up like any other well-dressed professional. It took all of Jackâs self-control to resist turning around, crossing the bar and punching the other man in the mouth. He had to wait another few minutes, at least, to find out whether Tipping would reveal anything. Then Jack would help to detain him.
Theyâd deliberately kept the police out of it. When they took Tipping into custody, theyâd drive straight to the US Embassy in Berlin, where assets were in place to question him immediately. If the German police were allowed to arrest him it would be weeks before he could be questioned by US authorities or extradited, which would leave cities glowing in the dark.
It was also imperative that they scoop Tipping up quietly. While the US could send some Navy SEALs into Africa, or a CIA agent into Southeast Asia, operations on allied soil needed to be done with a little more care. Germany had the means to give America a hard time if its assets were caught misbehaving, including Jack and Chen.
Jackâs eyes narrowed as he stared at them. Chen stood and shook hands with Tipping. Both men sat and started to talk, until a waiter came to take their order. They spoke for a minute or two and Chen wrote down the lot. Jack didnât take his eyes off Chenâs pen. The minute the Taiwanese man put it down it would be time for them to strike.
They never got the chance. Jackâs eyes widened as he saw four men closing in on Chen and Tipping from behind. He turned in his chair and shouted, âChen!â
As Chen looked up at him, Jack rushed forward. Tipping glanced at him, surprised, and they locked eyes for only a second. Jackâs lips curled up in fury, while Tipping smiled sadly and then turned to run. He didnât get far. One of the four men wrapped him up in a bear hug and another pulled a hood over his head. The two others moved to deal with Chen.
