CHAPTER TWENTY

There was pain. That was clear.

And there was darkness. I couldn't see.

I couldn't feel my legs beneath me. I couldn't move. Was I paralyzed?

Silence. Shouldn't there be the sound of traffic?

I tried to call out. Nothing came.

I should be feeling cold. Where is the wind? If I'm lying on the wet sidewalk, shouldn't I be chilled?

Ah. There were voices. Far away. I moved my mouth. The words didn't form. I made noises like someone without language.

Where were they? Could they see me?

Why was it so dark?

Someone was rolling me over, leaning over me. I couldn't see. Was I blind?

Another person stuck something in my eye. A finger? No, sharper. I moaned.

I began to float. I thought I heard an airplane. Was it an airplane? No. A train?

More voices. Music. What was that music? Outlaw.

I screamed.

Hands everywhere. Not friendly ones.

Pain.

Sleep.
