10 A TRIP TO THE OBSERVATORY

The sensation of magic vanished as soon as Jonah arrived, and all three of the kids breathed a sigh of relief. If Jonah noticed anything odd about the way they slumped together at the sudden loss of tension, he didn’t comment, just waved at them without rolling down the window and gestured at the trunk with a jerk of his thumb. They loaded their bikes into the large, flat trunk and scrambled into the van. Jonah greeted Eitan with a fist bump and the rest of them with a friendly nod. “ ’Sup, munchkins. You trying to see some stars?”

“Oh, definitely,” Becca said in her least convincing voice. “Can’t get enough stars.”

Eitan rolled his eyes. There was a reason Becca was never in charge of their cover story. “Naomi and I are interested in the stars,” he told his cousin, “but Becca is actually really into mapping the county. Do you think she could aim the telescope at the ground for a bit to see what’s around here?”

Jonah snorted. “Not a chance, bud. We’ve got those things so precisely calibrated, if you try to move them an inch without permission, you’d mess up years of research.”

“Oh.”

Jonah glanced around the car at their forlorn faces and cleared his throat uncomfortably. “I mean, that’s not to say you can’t still have a look!” he said quickly. “I’ve got a set of binoculars in the car somewhere. You can go out onto the railing and use those. Would that work?” He looked relieved when they all brightened. “Okay, awesome. To the observatory!”
