“PERFECT,” BECKY SAID with a smile.

“Really?”

“Sure, no way Rodney’d recognize you in one of these.”

“Yeah, but they stink. Do we have time to wash them?” I wondered.

“I don’t know, Cindy. These are old, they might fall apart if we try to wash them,” Becky told me, “We’ll spray some perfume on them.”

Great. My first dance and I will be there wearing a man’s old army uniform and smelling like mold and perfume. Geez.

We used safety pins and duct tape to alter the uniforms to fit us. Becky searched the floor of my closet and found an old pair of black galoshes that did look like regular boots when worn with the green fatigues. I choose to wear my tennis shoes. They might not go with the rest of my disguise, but I could run in them and that was what mattered to me.

We shoved everything into my overnight bag and told my parents about staying the night with Aunt Mortie. I didn’t check with my Aunt to make sure it was okay; she had never said no to a girls’ night.

“No, girls, I’m sorry. I have a date tonight,” Aunt Mortie said. We sat at her breakfast bar in the kitchen, watching my Aunt make hot cocoa.

“You do?” Becky and I asked at the same time. Aunt Mortie cocked an eyebrow at us as she stirred the milk, sugar and cocoa mixture in a pot on her cooktop.

“Yes, I do,” she said, “I won’t be back until late.”

“That’s okay, we can wait up for you,” I suggested. This was great. Aunt Mortie would not even be here tonight, and I wouldn’t have to lie to her about going to the dance.

“I’d like to hear about your date,” Becky said. Honestly, I would too.

“Is it that Marlboro Hackensack guy?” I asked.

“Winston Thackerville, smarty pants,” Aunt Mortie said with a laugh.

“So, can we stay?”

“Yes, I guess so. Can you two stay out of mischief while I’m gone?” Aunt Mortie asked.

“I can’t promise anything,” I said. She laughed like I had made a joke. I smiled and shrugged.

“Where’re you going on your date?” Becky asked.

“Winston volunteered to help look for those escaped prisoners, so I’m going along with him. Then we’ll probably get dinner in Blackmont,” my Aunt said.

“Looking for those escapees? Isn’t that dangerous?” I asked.

“I’ll be with Winston.”

“What? Is he some kind of zombie expert?” Becky asked.

“Zombie?”

“That’s what everyone is saying,” I explained, “One of them is sick and he’s turning into a zombie, biting people and everything.”

“How interesting,” Aunt Mortie said. She didn’t appear afraid or even nervous about going on a zombie hunt. My Aunt has always been an adventurer; she loves to travel and takes yearly trips to exotic places around the world. She would never be afraid of a rumor; but I knew the truth and I did not want my favorite aunt to be bitten by a zombie!

“Where will you be searching?” I asked.

“I don’t know, I think they’re sending everyone out in groups of two or three and assigning them specific areas to look.
