Chapter Four: SECRETS AND CONFESSIONS

Granny studied my face for several moments. She tapped one finger on the edge of her coffee cup and then slowly stood up and crossed to the back door. She looked outside for a minute or two and then turned to face Becky and me again.

"Well, girls, it does appear that you have a problem that needs solving," she said. "I think I have that solution."

Becky and I looked at each other. She had stopped banging her head on the table about halfway through my confession, and had even helped to explain some stuff to Granny. She had a hopeful expression on her face now, along with her red forehead.

I'm not sure what had come over me, but I had really spilled my guts about everything. Granny knew it all now, every time we had snuck out, where we went and what we did, even about the firecrackers and the police. Even about David being a vampire.

"Are you going to tell our parents?" I asked. Granny looked thoughtful for a moment.

"You should never keep things, important things, from your folks; I'm a firm believer in that. You shouldn't, but I have earned the right to keep some things to myself, and I believe this is one of those things," Granny said, then added, "but first I want you girls to promise you won't be pulling any more stunts like riding around town in the middle of the night without your folks' permission."

"We promise," Becky and I said together.

"All right then," Granny said. "I am going to get dressed and put my face on. You girls wash up those dishes and keep an ear tuned to the little ones until I'm finished."

"Okay, but Granny, you said you have the solution. What is it?" Becky asked.

"Leave that with me, girls. You two stay out of trouble, I'll deal with the vampire situation," Granny promised.

I wasn't sure I liked the sound of that. I could only hope that Granny really understood what I told her, and that she really did have a plan that would work. A plan where no one moved away or got grounded and no vampires got their feelings hurt.

Granny Mason left for a walk just after lunchtime. She had still not told us anything about her solution. I had been patient all morning, as patient as I had the ability to be, but I was nearing the limit of it.

"Come on, Becky, let's follow her," I suggested. We were sitting on Becky's front porch drinking lemonade and doing nothing.

"Follow Granny? Why?" Becky asked.

"I want to know what she's up to, don't you?" I said. Becky shrugged.

"I guess," she said. I grabbed Becky's hand, pulled her up from the porch steps and we followed Granny.

The hardest part of trailing Granny Mason was staying far enough behind her to remain undiscovered. She walked slowly...very slowly. I was motivated though, and I crept from tree to tree, parked car to hedge, and watched her every move. I was peeking around a rose bush by the Carpenter's driveway when I heard Becky sigh loudly.
