Chapter 30

“So, who’s this blonde then?” Fisher asked.

“I spoke to the waiter who served Lambton and his companion that night at the Crown, sir,” Julie said. “I’ve arranged to see him today in Southwold in case he can recall more details. But he doesn’t know her name.”

“Hmm,” Fisher said. He leant back in his office chair with his lips pursed.

“The waiter only knew Lambton’s name because he checked the receipts from that night, and Lambton had used his credit card to pay for the meal,” said Hewett.

“Right. So now we know that both Lambton and his wife were playing away, yes?” Fisher said. “Is this murder turning into a domestic, after all?”

“Could be, sir.” Hewett was twisting his wedding ring.

“But what’s the motive? Jealousy? Revenge? Just go and find that girl,” Fisher said. “And what about the other guy, Walker? Why haven’t we got him in yet?”

“We’ve asked Holt to keep an eye on his house,” said Hewett. “He’s not been seen at his antique store for the past few days. And nobody’s answering the phone.”

“Maybe he was saying farewell my lovely to Mrs Lambton,” Fisher said. “We might have to put the frighteners on her.”

He picked up a pen and spun it between his fingers.

They were dismissed.

“I’ll head straight to Southwold.” Julie and Hewett got in the lift together. They descended in silence and, instead of getting out at the CID suite, Hewlett remained with her in the lift. Maybe he’s going down to the canteen, Julie thought. But just before the doors opened, Hewett stepped towards her and kissed her on the lips.

Before she had time to think what she was doing, Julie kissed him back.

By the time she got to the car park, Julie knew she’d taken leave of her senses. How could she be such an idiot! Married men had always been off limits, and this one had the reputation of being the office lady-killer. Not only that, but he was her senior officer.

She’d have to put an end to this at once. But how? She glanced in the rear-view mirror and turned onto the A146. Luckily the traffic was light, for she paid it little attention.

She was ready for a new boyfriend. Paul had moved on some time ago, and had set up house with Meredith. There was no reason why she shouldn’t get out more. But where were the men who’d be willing to take on an eight-year-old boy?

She found a parking space along Southwold High Street. She got out and slammed the car door. The Crown was nearby.

She entered through an imposing Georgian portico. The pub was quiet. There was nobody in the front bar, apart from a young man with freckles, who was cleaning the back-bar area with a cloth. His long, ginger hair was tied back in a man bun. She went up to him and asked to see Justin Reynolds.

“That’s me,” he said. “Are you Detective Everett?”

“DS Everett, yes. Is there somewhere . . . ?”

“There’s a corner here where we can sit.
