“I’m not ready”

“The world isn’t changed by people who are ready.”

- Richie Norton

When I hear someone say “I am not ready” as an excuse, the example of the Israelites from the Old Testament comes to mind. They always seemed to lack the will to take the necessary action.

The Israelites were easily “swayed by the wind,” going whichever way it blew as situations and circumstances changed. They always did so to their own detriment. They allowed things to happen to them, and no matter what occurred, they did not lift a finger of their own volition to save themselves.

They cried out to God to free them from slavery in Egypt, but once God set the wheels of change in motion and the going got tough, they decided they weren’t ready and wanted to head back to the way it was in Egypt. These people held God responsible for their situation, asked God for help, and when they got what they were asking for, they said they were not ready.

They also became impatient as they looked to external factors to define themselves, as evidenced by having Moses’s brother, Aaron, make an idol for them in the form of a golden calf when Moses was gone too long from them.

They could not be patient as they were told to be. They were so dependent on others to provide for them that they had to replace their faith with something that was immediate to them in the form of an idol. They were not ready for the change they received.

The following verses are from Proverbs, making the point that waiting for the time when you are ready to make a positive change will end up leaving you in a worse position than when you began.

“I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” (Proverbs 24:30-34)

The fact is that the “sluggard” is the one with a defeatist mindset, and this verse from the Bible is for those that have this mindset; therefore, I challenge each one to do whatever it takes to change this mindset to become better versions of themselves each day.

The next time you find yourself saying that you are not ready, remember that the bad times and poverty can “come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”

Having spent a considerable time thinking about this particular excuse, I was able to get over my initial judgment response towards the people that use it.

I began to understand why people say that they are “not ready” when asked why they have not taken the necessary steps to accomplish their dreams—the people that talk about their dreams; some plan and some do not, but many end up not doing anything at all.
