We can look back into our evolutionary past, but that past is not really dead, it is alive and functioning in our innermost neural “creatureness.”

Carl Jung, the other founding father of psychoanalysis, was very aware of this and considered that our mental life, like our physical bodies, has a hoary origin from long ago:

“Just as the human body represents a whole museum of organs, with a long evolutionary history behind them, so we should expect that the mind to be organized in a similar way.
