I went back to Bob Summerâs webpage on the governorâs site. There was a resume of sorts that listed where heâd done his undergrad, where heâd gotten his law degreeâsome university Iâd never heard of. It detailed his military service. Before he was the deputy chief of staff, heâd been a legislative assistant, and then a campaign manager. Heâd worked in politics since he got his J.D. If heâd practiced law, it didnât say so on the page. Maybe he couldnât hack it in the courtroom?
âHey, Liz?â I called over to the desk where my summer intern was putting the finishing touches on the database Iâd asked her to build for the summer reading program. âWhen youâre finished with that, can you come here?â
âYeah, Iâm done, sorry. Just got sucked in watching TikToks.â She laughed and headed over to my desk. âWhatâs up, Ms. Baker?â
Anna and Liz Cooper had been in the library all day every day this week. I wondered if their parents even missed them. If they were this quiet and well behaved at home, they might not even realize their girls had left the house.
âHow are you at digging up dirt on people?â I questioned.
âLike how much dirt?â Liz clarified. âAre we talking criminal records and other public info, or do you want to see bank accounts and get their phone records?â
I gasped. âYou can do that?â
âI got you those other bank records, didnât I?â She shrugged nonchalantly. She had no idea what a genius she was.
âIâm just curious about someone who works for the governorâitâs his deputy chief of staff, Robert Summer. Do you think you could find out if he has any connections to the Department of Natural Resources? And do you think you can find out how his son Dan met our mayorâs daughter, Melody Steyer?â
âI can certainly try.â Liz scribbled down a few notes on a pad of paper. âGive me a couple hours.â
âOh, of course. No hurry!â I couldnât believe how much easier having someone like Liz around made this job. I mean, not that it was a job. My real job was being a librarian. But I had to admit, my priorities shifted when it became apparent no one else wanted to solve the mystery of the dead fish. Just because we hadnât seen any more for a week or two didnât mean it didnât happen, or that the ones we lost werenât valuable and didnât deserve vindication.
I was more than a librarian, I was a Fish Avenger.
Maybe I needed a cape?
