CHAPTER 21
Our third crime scene of the night looked just about the same in every respect as the previous two. Mr. Mack Warmington had been killed with a single bullet to the head, and two more shots to the chest, and from the way he was lying, stretched out on the floor of his living room, the neighbor who had reported the possible crime in progress was correct: the victim had let his killer in the door.
âLooks like weâve got ourselves a serial killer on our hands,â said Chase now as he studied the scene.
Dooley and I knew the drill, so we immediately went in search of any possible pet witnesses. Unfortunately, just like in the previous two cases, Mr. Warmington wasnât amongst the multitudes of Americans who love having a pet around. He didnât even own a goldfish as far as I could tell. Not that it would have done us any good, since goldfish are tough guys, and as everyone knows, tough guys donât talk. They also donât dance, but thatâs neither here nor there.
âNot much for us to do here, Max,â said Dooley as we finished up our tour of the place. âNo pets, no witnesses, no cluesâ¦â He gave me an expectant look. âUnless youâve got it all figured out already?â
âNo, Iâm afraid Iâve got nothing figured out,â I said. âExcept the fact that there seems to be a strong resemblance between all three of the victims: all of them lived alone, without any pets, and without any partners. So what does that tell you, Dooley?â
âUm⦠that maybe they were all members of the same club? The club for petless partnerless people?â
I nodded. âIt certainly is something to take into consideration. It will no doubt be part of the investigation to determine whether they were all members of the same dating app, and possibly met their killer on that app.â
But that was something for Chase to determine. There would be background checks, phone records being studied, and internet search history closely looked at. Anything to provide a connection between the three victims and hopefully lead to their killer.
We had returned to the living room, where Abe Cornwall was looking extremely happy, I have to say.
âThree dead in one night!â the coroner caroled jubilantly. âThis must be some kind of record. If you keep this up Iâll have to shift some stiffs at the morgue to make space for these fresh cadavers.â
Odelia grimaced at these words, which sounded harsh to the layman but probably were like music to the ears of your average coroner or medical examiner. After all, if you love your job, living in an area with a high crime rate is like manna from heaven. And at the rate we were going, this serial killer was undoubtedly going to make more victims before the night was over.
âI better call your uncle,â said Chase now as he took out his phone. âHe told me to keep him informed of any developments in the caseâor cases.â
