CHAPTER 10
THREE WHOLE CLOVES of garlic did not go down well. Even though it was probably all in his head, Stanley thought he was going to throw up on his way to class. Why did he listen to William? Had he ever eaten raw garlic before? Of course, it had to be raw and chewed just right to get the full effect of the oils. He could still taste garlic even after brushing his teeth. He'd probably be tasting garlic for a week.
So gross.
Once his bike was locked up, he made his way to the classroom, past the common area. He walked into class and set his bag on the floor. Which topic are we covering tonight? He reached into his bag and pulled out his math book. Only two other students were in the classroom. Even Mr. Morso hadn't shown up.
Stanley looked to the door. Mr. Morso stood there talking with two other students. With a motion, he offered for them to enter the room first. Just before he crossed into the room, he froze. Just stopped and stood like a statue. Stanley turned back around. He wanted to watch, but if he did, he was likely to get into trouble. If Mr. Morso was a vampire, garlic would repulse him. Stanley was certain it would also infuriate him. He'd know straight away who'd eaten the garlic. He tried not to lower his head or look suspicious but knew that in doing so he looked even guiltier. How could he look like he hadn't done anything?
"Stanley, I want to speak with you after class." Mr. Morso didn't even pause as he passed Stanley's desk, but he knew. Without a doubt, his teacher had already identified the person responsible for the foul smell of garlic permeating the classroom. Doomed! He was doomed. He would need to plan a way out of the classroom. How could he get out of the room without anyone noticing?
Stanley stood abruptly and ran into another student. They both fell to the floor.
"Hey!" It was Becky Chastain. She had transferred in from another school. She'd worn a pale-blue, short-sleeve sweater top and a skirt. She tried to roll out from under Stanley and pulled at her skirt as she got up.
"I'm sorry." Stanley handed her the papers that had fallen to the floor.
She shook her head and flipped her long auburn hair over her shoulder. "Where were you going so fast?"
If he could, he would have just stood and stared at her all night, but she just sat down.
"Mr. Kodluboy, if you're quite done accosting members of the class, I think we'd all like to get started. We've got a lot of material to cover tonight, and a short film to watch. I expect everyone to stay awake for the movie this time or I'll have to assign homework, and no one is here in summer school to do homework. Open your biology books to chapter nine and let's get started."
It didn't matter how much Mr. Morso talked, Stanley couldn't get his mind off of Becky.
