That night, Rusty opened the refrigerator, wrinkled his nose in

disinterest at what was inside, and then shut it again. I bet Caspian would

have a great meal cooked for me. It was almost worth the blood sucking.

But then he shook his head, disgusted with himself. No, no, no. He was

not going to fall into that hole. He had to get rid of Caspian. No matter

what.

He turned around, frowning, and peered absentmindedly out the

window of the backdoor.

"Holy shit," he said, leaping backward.

Caspian stared at him from the other side. Without waiting for

permission, Caspian opened the door and stepped inside. Right now he

was fully clothed in jeans and a T-shirt, and his eyes were downcast. In

his hand, he held a plate filled with what appeared to be chicken on a bed

of rice smothered in some sort of white sauce with cheddar cheese.

Rusty's mouth began to water, and he had to remind himself, This is just a

pity meal because he wants to suck your blood. And other things as well,

apparently.

"Caspian," he said, "will you knock? You almost killed me. And not

your kind of killed. Killed, killed."

"I'm sorry, Rusty," Caspian said, extending the plate to him. "I think I

confused some things."

Some things? I think you confused everything. His eyes lingered on the

food and he knew that he shouldn't take it. It was payoff for the blood

sucking. Yet it smelled so good, and it sure as hell beat the shriveled

flotsam that was inside of his refrigerator at the moment. He accepted the

food, set it on the table, and grabbed silverware from the drawer. After he

turned around, he looked at the chairs and then at Caspian, and then sat

down. Caspian sat across from him.

"As I said, I must apologize to you about last night," Caspian said.

"And this morning."

Rusty nodded and dug into his chicken. He stuck a bite in his mouth

and a spicy, tangy flavor like he had never tasted before made him shut
