Werner to Elisabeth
Berlin, Thursday night [July 17?]
Dear Li!
This time I had many of your letters awaiting me here, thank you so much! . . .
Last night after my arrival, I paid visits to the Wirtz family and Weizsäcker. It so happened that the son of General Haushofer was there, who had interesting things to tell. On the whole, I find the species of homo politicus not very likeable, but this one, at least, was cultured and humorous.—The reports of the Wehrmacht from the east sound somewhat worrisome, the resistance of the Russians seems much stronger than anyone had expected initially. What would happen if the German push were to come to a standstill somewhere is barely imaginable. How good it is to have our house on the Walchensee.
My main activity at this time is to look forward to taking a vacation where you are. Work is not going well anymore, and it is time for me to get away from this daily grind. Experiments in Leipzig have to be completed before, however. These seem to go rather well at this time. We are discontinuing our colloquium for now, to be continued in September.
Today I am quite tired, my thinking is criss-crossing and can no longer stay focused. So I better close this letter and write more again tomorrow, or the day after. Good night! Yours, Werner.
