Chapter 29

Nicole

Time just keeps marching on. It doesn’t stop because your heart is breaking. The past month has been hard. Tommi has moved on with his life, which means the little blond everyone was talking about is now a weekend fixture in our town. The first few times I saw them out, I avoided them by ducking down a different aisle in the grocery store or farmers market.

Tonight, there will be nowhere to run and hide. I finally buckled when Kristi pulled the you owe me card. She’s made me work for every minute she’s given me. The baby hasn’t even softened her up toward me. I screwed us both when I ran away from Tommi.

The woman is determined to drive me nuts with her crying. We could have been sisters, but now she’s stuck with a bottle blond, which I’m sure is a lie. I’ve seen the little bit of a woman several times, and that’s not a dye job at all.

Thinking of her as my best friend’s future sister-in-law makes my stomach cramp up. When and where did everything spin so fast and out of control? None of this was what had been planned for our lives. No, I totally feel like the odd man out when everyone gets together. I’m the single one. Hell, even Josh grew-up and committed to a relationship. Once again, how the hell did life get so far out of my control?

There’s not a thing in this world I’d do to interfere with Tommi’s life. He seems happier, more of the boy I’d always loved. Sadly, my only involvement in that is letting him go. There’s not a thing I’d do to jeopardize his future happiness with Shelby, but that’s a hard thing to admit to myself, let alone to anyone else.

Walking out the front door, the air is crisp with a hint of warmer weather not far away, but far enough away that I know we will get at least one more snow plus another month of freezing morning temperatures. The drive across town takes a matter of minutes, and it looks like everyone else is already here as I pull up to the little hole in the wall bar. It seems I’m always running late in every area of my life. This shouldn’t be any different.

Spending a few hours with my friends, playing pool and darts, leaves a lot to be desired in life. Giving everyone a hug goodnight, I slip out of the communion of a bunch of friends I feel have outgrown me. There’s never been a time when I haven’t felt at home with any of them, but now it seems we’ve all grown up and moved past the childhood dreams we carried until recently.

It’s easy to spot the big man hunched down on my little porch as I pull up in front of the little cottage,

“Dozer, what in the hell are you doing sitting on my porch in the cold weather? Please tell me Jax didn’t send you to babysit me through a rough patch in my life.
