Elation filled the spaces between the heavy raindrops pelting the departing patrons of Calliope’s. The abrupt storm couldn’t extinguish the excitement sparking in the jazz chorale who had just conquered their fears and performed in front of an audience that expected the best. Everyone including herself was on cloud nine.

That was until her drive home became a treacherous undertaking. Lena gripped the steering wheel, scooting forward to see through the rain-soaked windshield.

She inched the car over the rough patches in the road as a truck sped by her, drenching her mini-van in its wake. “Jackass!” she yelled. Driving in the rain through the darkened back roads was already nerve-racking and the careless drivers made her hands shake with fear.

A clink sounded on the van’s hood. Hail. She pushed her foot down on the gas. The quicker she got home, the better she would feel. Clink! Clink! Clink! She whined.

Then she screamed, the car skidded to the right and yanked her around the front seat, wrenching the steering wheel from her grasp. Then everything went black.
