We had to ring the bell twice, but then a cranky voice called to us. "Hold your horses, for Pete's sake! I ain't able to make it to the door like I used to. Cut an old lady a break!"
The voice was rusty with age and raspy from what I guessed was a lifetime of smoking cigarettes. Probably unfiltered if I had to venture a guess based on just her voice. The snick of a chain lock being slid in its track sounded a moment before a little lady barely five feet tall yanked the door open.
The woman standing there glaring at us was wearing a pink house coat, and her gray hair was in curlers. She continued to scowl at us, her lips pressed together in a way that only people with no teeth can pull off. "You better hope this building is on fire! My stories are on, and I ainât got the hang of that DVR thing yet. Chase is right in the middle of asking Angelica to marry him, but Sue Lynn just came back from the dead." She shook her head. "That floozyâs died half a dozen times, but she just keeps popping back up like a bad penny.â
I bit the inside of my jaw to keep from smiling. There were some things you just didn't mess with, and a little old ladyâs stories were one of them.
Hunter looked properly chastised. "Weâre real sorry to bother you, ma'am, but we need to ask you about your neighbors. Iâm Sheriff Woods.â
She drew her scant eyebrows down. âI know who you are. Iâm old, not senile, and itâs about time. Iâm Margaret Dawdy, and Iâve called the law on those no-good party animals a dozen times if I called them once, and ain't nobody ever come out to check on âem.â
I raised a brow. Surely, she wasn't talking about Curtis and Val. From all accounts, they weren't exactly the party animal type people. "I think we might be missing each other. Weâre here to ask you about your next door neighbors, Curtis and Val."
Her wrinkled face shifted from angry into blasé. "Oh, them. Whatcha wanna know? There ain't much to tell. They keep to themselves, they put their trash out only when you're supposed to, and they even use them recycle bins that the county sent out to us. I don't never hear a peep from âem, âceptinâ when they bring my paper in for me."
Hunter shifted his weight. "To begin with, we'd like to know if you've seen Val in the last day."
I opened my mind to try to get a peek into hers, but all that came through was mild irritation and flickering images of what I assumed was a soap opera.
Ms. Margaret worked her mouth for a minute like she was chewing something. "Can't say as I have. In fact, I ain't seen either one of them for the last few days. They did stop and tell me they was rentinâ a cabin on the other side of town for a few days, though.
