CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Charles Tillesley was at the reception desk, engaged in conversation with the concierge, when Coburg and Lampson arrived at the Savoy; and as soon as he saw them he hurried over.
âIâm so glad you came,â he said. âYou got my message?â
âNo,â said Coburg. âWeâve been out most of the day. We decided to call back and see if there have been any recent developments.â
âIndeed,â said Tillesley. âElla Kemble has disappeared.â
âDisappeared?â echoed Coburg.
âShe never came in to work today. I sent someone to her address to see if she was all right, thereâs quite a lot of colds going round, but her landlady said she hadnât seen her since yesterday morning, when she left to come to work.â
âSo, she didnât spend the night at home?â
âNo.â He looked anguished. âWhatâs happening? On the same day Daisy Scott is murdered, and another of the maids disappears.â
âLeave it to us, Mr Tillesley. If you give me Ella Kembleâs address, Iâll call there and see what her landlady has to tell me.â
âCertainly,â said Tillesley gratefully. He handed Coburg a piece of paper. âI had this ready to give you when you arrived. Itâs Ellaâs address in Clerkenwell. Her landlady is a woman called Mrs Sarah Hobbs.â
âThank you, Mr Tillesley,â said Coburg. âI can give you a couple of pieces of information about Daisy Scott. She was three months pregnant. And, before she was stabbed, she was poisoned.â
Tillesley stared at him, uncomprehending. âBut why stab her if she was already dead?â
âThatâs the question Iâm also asking,â said Coburg. âIâll let you know if I have more from Mrs Hobbs about Ella.â
As Coburg and Lampson headed for the car park, Lampson said: âSuspicious, Ella Kemble just vanishing like that?â
âVery,â agreed Coburg.
âSo, weâre heading to Clerkenwell?â
âNo, I am,â said Coburg firmly. âYou go home and keep an eye on that son of yours. Iâll drop you off at St Pancras New Church.â
âThatâs a bit out of your way, guv,â said Lampson. âItâs more direct to Clerkenwell from here if you head due east â¦â
âIf I decide to go a different route, thatâs my choice,â said Coburg.
âYes, but under the regulations concerning the economic use of petrol â¦â began Lampson.
âOr you can walk,â said Coburg.
âPoint taken,â said Lampson.
After dropping his sergeant off by St Pancras New Church at the edge of Somers Town, Coburg drove to Clerkenwell and the address in Hardwick Street heâd been given for Ella Kemble. For the moment, the Sisters of Josephine would have to wait.
Ella Kembleâs landlady, Mrs Hobbs, a pleasant, motherly woman in her fifties, was bewildered.
âIâve never had anything like this happen before,â she told Coburg. âFor her to go off without a word.â
âIs her rent paid up to date?â asked Coburg.
âIt is,â said Mrs Hobbs. âSheâs never been behind with the rent, not like some have been in the past.â
âWhen did you actually see her last?â
âYesterday morning, half past seven. The same time she always left for work.â
âHow was she dressed? Did she have her maidâs uniform on?â
âShe did. I saw it beneath her coat,â nodded Mrs Hobbs.
