CHAPTER 11

Brigid rushed back to the house, Jett trotting beside her, thinking about Brett. The unmistakable stillness of his body on the ground had shocked her. Why, she wasn’t sure. It wasn’t the first dead body she’d seen. But her hands were trembling as she reached for the door to the B & B and twisted the door knob. She let Jett precede her through the door before entering and shutting the door softly behind her.

“So?” Linc said as she came into view. He and Holly were washing dishes together, and he didn’t look up from the sink. “See anything?”

“Yeah, we have a problem,” she said softly.

“Oh?” Linc said as he looked up. Seeing her expression, he dried his hands. “What’s wrong?”

Brigid crossed the short distance to stand as close to him as possible. “Brett’s dead.”

“Are you serious?” Linc asked as Brigid turned toward the kitchen island and reached for her phone.

“Unfortunately, I am,” she muttered as she picked up her cell phone and searched for Sheriff Davis’ number. Linc and Holly stared at each other, dumbfounded. They couldn’t believe what she’d just said.

“What can I do fer ya’, Brigid?” Sheriff Davis asked as he answered her call.

“I have a situation over here at the B & B,” she said quickly. “One of our guests has been shot. He’s out back in the woods. He’s dead.” She was doing her best to take calm, even breaths. Otherwise, she was afraid she’d start hyperventilating.

“Self-inflicted gunshot or otherwise?” he asked, getting straight to the point.

“I’m not really sure,” she admitted. “I didn’t stay there and look that long.”

“On my way now. Don’t tell anyone besides Linc if ya’ can help it. Let’s keep this under wraps fer now,” he said. “Don’t want anyone gettin’ worked up if it was done by their own hand.”

“Will do,” Brigid said as she hung up.

“Are you sure it’s him?” Holly asked with a horrified look on her face. She’d been waiting for Brigid to get off the phone so she could ask.

“Pretty sure,” Brigid nodded. “I admit I didn’t exactly stand there and analyze his features. But I would say with a fair amount of confidence that it’s him.” She closed her eyes to take a deep breath and saw a flash of the scene in her mind. Quickly, she jerked her eyes back open to keep from seeing anymore. “I wonder how Amanda is going to take this.”

“Well if he’s as bad a person as you said he was, maybe she won’t be so upset,” Holly shrugged. Brigid and Linc looked at her in surprise. “What?” she asked as she looked at them. “You can’t tell me you weren’t thinking about it. If he really was as domineering and abusive as you say…” She let her sentence trail off.

Linc leaned closer and whispered, “What if she did it?” His eyes darted from Brigid’s to Holly’s and back again.

Brigid’s mind was racing, trying to process these new developments. What did this mean for their B &
