Chapter Fifteen

After having lunch with her sister and niece, Kyoko returned to the Namba offices of the Nakamura Detective Agency. Teppei had since left, but Nobu was now in and he and Saori were enhancing the images Kyoko took outside the JK shop as much as possible. If they could find any people Etsuko knew as having been clients of Chiharu’s, that might give them a lead on how to proceed next.

Even before she had her jacket off, Kyoko already had her pack of Seven Stars in hand and drew one of the cigarettes, placing it between her lips and lighting it up. She took a long drag on the end of the cigarette and removed it from her lips, savoring the taste as the smoke slowly circled from her open mouth.

“God, that feels good,” she muttered.

“Long day, boss?” asked Nobu.

“No, it was actually really nice,” said Kyoko. “But I haven’t had a cigarette since this morning.”

While keeping the cigarette between her lips. Kyoko took off her jacket and deposited it in her office. She walked out to the reception area and sat on the couch in front of her colleagues, crossing her legs. After tapping the cigarette against the ashtray, she took another drag on the filter.

“Anything on those letters?”

Nobu chuckled. Saori shot him an angry glare. Kyoko’s eyes drifted between them.

“What?” she asked. “Is there something?”

“In a manner of speaking…” Saori groaned and picked up a piece of paper. “So, Teppei and I went through all those possible letters. Played with different combinations. We could only get a few words out of it.”

“Like what?”

“‘Mourn TV’ and ‘rum on TV.’” The tone in Saori’s voice conveyed that she didn’t exactly think those would be much help in cracking the case.

“Don’t forget ‘rum, no TV,’” added Nobu.

Saori rolled her eyes. “Thank you for being so helpful.”

He chuckled again.

“Great, so we still have no idea what R86 might mean,” said Kyoko. “I’ll ask Etsuko about it when she comes in. Maybe it’s some sort of street code or something.”

“What about that reporter?” asked Nobu. “You think he might have something?”

“I have no idea. It’s likely he’s just sniffing around for a story, but on the off-chance that he knows something, it’s worth having a meeting with him.” Kyoko took another drag on the cigarette. “How are those pictures?”

“Cleaned ’em up as much as possible and got ’em on our cloud server,” said Nobu. “Should be clear enough for Etsuko to identify anyone she knows.”

“Good, it’s something to get us started.” Kyoko stomped out the cigarette in the ashtray and entered her office.

In there, she spent about an hour finishing up reports on completed cases to provide to her clients. She also put in a call to Hashimoto to see if he’d managed to dig up anything yet, but there wasn’t much word on the police front. The alibi Chiharu’s parents gave them checked out, so it definitely wasn’t them. Kyoko doubted that anyway, but she imagined Chiharu had dealt with some
