Chapter Fifteen

And after all that, Dewi Dharmawijaya’s flight was canceled. Not the flight, exactly, but Dewi’s visit.

“Family emergency,” said President Woodhouse on the other end of Constance’s cell phone. “I’m very sorry you made the trip for nothing, Constance.”

“It’s no problem.”

“Did you manage to at least get a good dinner in last night?”

“I did,” said Constance, the images of Powerful and Lean flooding her mind.

“Dewi will be rescheduling, but we don’t know when. Again, I’m sorry about the wasted time, Constance.”

The drive from Boston to Dunstable was just slightly over two hours, but it felt like ten. Constance’s foot on the gas pedal was uneven, and her attention kept veering from the road to the Magnus Hotel and her encounter with Powerful and Lean.

Honnnnnnnk.

An air horn blared behind her and the Jetta shimmied from the gale force wind of a fully-loaded semi, passing them on the right.

“Pay attention, Constance,” she said aloud.

She turned on WHDQ and pushed the volume up, letting the music sweep over her, that pounding rhythm and bass. It helped, but not enough. Her thoughts kept returning to the suite, and the two men. Powerful kneeling above her, Lean’s mouth and hands on her breasts. Fantasy #3 –two men, an anonymous hotel room—had been fulfilled, and she had loved it. But the wetness and ache between her legs, the knowledge that two men had been inside her, filling her, that she had taken one in her mouth while the other thrust and drove within, did nothing to slake her desire.

It only made it worse.

That was the sad truth. Another encounter of the kind she had dreamed about all her adult life, but was Fantasy #3 at rest now? No. In the wake of it, she was even more restless. Unsatisfied. Filled with an unfocused, generalized lust. Desire twinged between her legs, in that place that was still soft and wet. Now what? She pounded the steering wheel in frustration.

Nothing yet had satisfied her. At the end, she was left still wanting. First The Michaelis in the back seat of this very car she was driving, then the beautiful boy-man James in the dark alley, and now Powerful and Lean in the Magnus Hotel – each time was ultimately unsatisfying.

Beep! Beep!

Constance wrenched her attention back to the road. 93 was a mess at this time of day and if she wanted to stay alive then she needed to pay attention. She took a deep breath and focused.

At Wragby Hall, Ivy Bolton and the Things were hard at work on the day’s tasks: campaign donations to be sorted; fundraising letters, both electronic and post, to be sent out; details of Cliff’s speech next week to be hammered out. Ivy looked up and smiled as Constance wandered in.

“Look at you,” she said. “How beautiful you look.”

The Things glanced up, startled at the unexpected comment from the driven and focused Ivy Bolton, and Constance looked down at herself. Jeans and a light cotton sweater, the clothes she’d packed and then put on this morning without even taking a shower.
