“Go-go, did I just see you and Lukah come in together?” Mum asks as she strolls into my room, her eyes scanning over the numerous shopping bags on my bed.

I knew damn well that Lukah didn’t intend to do fuck all Christmas shopping, but there were sales on, so I made him carry my bags while he bitched and moaned about being treated like a boyfriend with none of the boyfriend perks.

He did buy some soap for my mum, so there’s that at least. I suggested he get something for his dad, but he told me that hell wasn’t freezing over just yet.

“Yeah, he needed some help Christmas shopping...”

“You two seem to be getting along well.”

I raise a brow at her. I’m pretty confident that we spend more time hurling insults at one another than we do getting along, but I know what she means. My mum is a perceptive woman, there’s not much that gets by her – my ongoing flirtation with Lukah included apparently.

“I’ve seen the way he’s been looking at you, go-go.”

Mum has called me ‘go-go’ since I was about three years old.

I busy myself with the bags. “Mmm, how’s that?”

“Like he wants to rip your clothes off and screw you up against a wall.”

“Mum!” I gape at her.

“Oh please, I’m not a hundred. I’m aware there is sex outside of the missionary position.”

Jesus Christ.

“Well… that’s… good to know.”

“Seriously, Margot, I think you should stay away from him. He’s trouble.”

He’s trouble alright, with a capital fucking ‘T’, but she’s wasting her breath – I’m not about to run off into the sunset with the guy.

There’s an attraction between us, and that’s it. I want nothing more from Lukah than his hard dick, and even that, I’m resisting for the greater good.

“You’ve got nothing to worry about, Mum. We’re just giving each other a hard time.”

She nods, the look in her eyes disbelieving, and reaches out to take the new top I’m holding.

I pass it to her, and she holds it up. “Cute.”

“Do you know why Lukah and Rick give each other such a hard time?” I pry, hoping that she has some information that could help me understand what went on between the two men to make them despise even being in the same room together.

She frowns. “I’m not sure exactly. Rick said they had a falling out years ago. I think it might have been when Rick and Lukah’s mum split up. Maybe Lukah didn’t take it too well?”

I shrug my shoulders. Maybe that’s all it is. A messy divorce could have been what it took to pit father against son.

“I’m going to meet Miranda for dinner tonight, do you want to come with?”

I shake my head. I’m beat. I just want to put on my PJ’s and curl up with some Netflix and popcorn. If I go out with Mum and Miranda, we’ll end up drinking cocktails and that could lead to anything.

I’m not up for a repeat of one of those nights. I need some peace and quiet.
