MOTHER

‘Fancy bumping into you, Dennis. What a coincidence. Loving the hair, darling.’ She sat down without being asked. ‘What a city slicker you look – who knew? In a brand-new suit, as well. And who is this charming young woman? Introduce us, Dennis. Where are your manners?’

Charlotte sat opposite them and was surprised to see anger directly aimed at her, from Rosie. Anger and yes, fear as well. Always a bonus. Charlotte wondered what she could possibly have done to deserve such a terrifying and cold anger. What had Dennis been saying about his dear old mother?

Like a child, Dennis flapped his hand between her and Rosie, making his reluctance at the forced introduction, palpable. ‘Mother, this is Rosie. Rosie, my mother, Charlotte.’

Charlotte reached out her hand to take Rosie’s and found it hanging in the air between them, unclasped.

‘Please don’t hurt my mother. If you do, I’ll kill you. Tell me you won’t,’ Rosie said, her words running into each other, joined together by wine.

‘Okay, I won’t. There, satisfied?’

Adrenalin flooded Charlotte’s body as she sat, apparently on the brink of committing something heinous upon Rosie’s mother. Or certainly having the wherewithal to do so, in this girl’s mind. This was already proving to be so much better than she could have anticipated. I am cast as the villain, and I know not why. This is the type of psychological warfare for which I am primed and ready. It is what I yearn for.

Dennis’s eyes rounded at Rosie’s words, and he mutely stared at his mother, wanting her help. See, he is useless without me. Already she was bailing him out. But he wasn’t giving her any clues, so she’d have to play it by ear. But that was something that came naturally; preying on the fears of others and capitalising on them – that particular art sat happily within her repertoire, desperate to be put to use. It’s what she did best. What a hoot.

Dennis leant forward, now pretend-sipping wine from the second bottle. Making it all too easy for Charlotte, he was well on the way to sobering up; fear would do that to a man.

‘Mother, please tell Rosie that now you’re here with us and you can see she’s cooperating, you won’t need to visit her mother. Please, put Rosie’s mind at rest. You don’t have to do anything, okay?’

Charlotte clapped her hands. ‘But of course. I can see that Rosie is indeed behaving herself. I’m reassured on that count. Your mother will be grateful to know that, Rosie.’

Rosie didn’t speak, just glared. A tear fell slowly down her cheek. Or maybe the girl was leaking alcohol through her pores, it was difficult to be sure. She was well on the way to being incapacitated. That too played into Charlotte’s hands. But she’d expected more from the girl. She admitted that she was a little disappointed. Wanting a fight, she was put out that Rosie was already reduced to weeping. Charlotte had to stave off her natural testiness at not immediately getting what she wanted.
