SETTING
A small inner-city park. A park bench.
TINA and BOBBY walk on.
BOBBY:â Only thing he says is, âYou have to answer yes to all these questions or you donât get the job. Do you have a licence? Do you have a safe driving record? Can you drive a standard shift? Can you sew?â
TINA:â Can you what?
BOBBY:â Sew. Because when Iâm not delivering the carpets Iâm supposed to be sewing binding around all these leftover pieces to make little mats. So yeah, I tell him I can sew.
TINA:â You lie.
BOBBY:â Right. Because whatâs one more lie?
TINA:â You lied about something else?
BOBBY:â Yeah. About the standard shift. Man, I was sure that was going to be the deal breaker.
TINA:â Oh. But not the sewing.
BOBBY:â Before I even got to the sewing, it was the stick shift I had to worry about. I mean, how was I gonna fake that, right? Iâm pretty good at faking things but â
TINA:â What? No, youâre not.
BOBBY:â I faked my way all the way through high school, Tina.
TINA:â Is that what you think?
BOBBY:â Itâs the truth.
TINA:â No, itâs bullshit. You think you tricked those teachers or something? Most of them passed you outta pity.
BOBBY:â Pity? Whatya talking about?
TINA:â They felt sorry for you, Bobby.
BOBBY:â Why?
TINA:â For the same reason a lot of people do.
BOBBY:â Yeah, and whatâs that?
TINA:â I donât know. Iâm still trying to figure that out. Anyway it was pity and nothing else that got you through school.
BOBBY:â Thatâs your opinion.
TINA:â Thatâs everyoneâs opinion.
BOBBY:â Everyoneâs? Come on. Okay. My dadâs for sure but heâs just â
TINA:â What happened?
BOBBY:â When?
TINA:â When you tried to drive the storeâs car.
BOBBY:â It wasnât a car. You canât deliver carpets in a freakinâ car. It was a shitty old VW van, which I taught myself how to drive in an hour in the parking lot.
TINA:â Really?
BOBBY:â Well good enough to get the thing moving and start my deliveries. And I had like twelve of them, right? So thatâs twelve times carrying these monster freakinâ carpets up three, four sometimes five flights of stairs because none of the buildings around here have elevators for some reason.
TINA:â Well most of them are public housing. And they didnât put fancy things like elevators in them.
BOBBY:â Right. So what are people in public housing doing buying carpets anyway?
TINA:â Why shouldnât they have carpets?
BOBBY:â Iâm not saying they shouldnât have them. Iâm saying why do they need them.
TINA:â That storeâs merchandise is cheap shit. They shouldnât even have cheap, shitty carpets on their floors? Is that what youâre saying? Only people who live in buildings with elevators should have carpets, so you wouldnât have to carry them up the stairs . . . Iâm probably going to wind up in public housing.
