And The Girl
CHAPTER 7
The dirt path sloped upward along the rise of the hills where Mortimer and his mare followed Eonder around the curves and bends. At the top of the rise Mortimer looked down. The path before them disappeared below into a dense, narrow forest of pine and fir trees.
Mortimer goaded his horse into a trot to catch up to Eonderâs mare. He shifted in his saddle and grabbed the reins tighter. Mortimer remembered that the last time he was in a forest he had dueled with a dragon. He reached for his pointy stick, ready to battle any savage beast again.
Nightfall came quickly to the forest. Mortimer wondered where Eonder was leading them and why they were traveling in the dark.
Ahead, a pinpoint of light shown through the trees. The pine and fir trees cleared to reveal a cabin of stone and wood. Large rocks, the size of millstones, had been stacked at the four corners of the cabin. Wooden beams connected all four corners with mud smeared on the outside to form an airtight seal. A stone chimney jutted out from the house, rising above the mud covered wooden beams that formed the roof.
Gray smoke curled out of the chimney. A soft, yellow light glowed from an open window, and the smell of food drifted to Mortimerâs nose. As if on cue, his stomach gurgled.
Eonder guided the horses to a wooden shed and opened the door. One horse occupied the shed, a chestnut filly eating oats from a trough. The filly looked up, then continued her meal. Eonder and Mortimer wrapped their reigns around a post so that their horses could also bend down to the trough.
Eonder patted them on the neck. âGood night, girls. Enjoy your meal.â All three horses neighed and stomped their hoofs. He closed the door and turned toward Mortimer. âCome, it is time for our dinner.â
To Mortimerâs surprise, Eonder opened the door and walked right in. Mortimer was even more surprised when a girl turned around and said, âHello, Grandfather.â She put a wooden spoon back into the pot she had been stirring and came to give Eonder a big squeeze around his waist.
Mortimer stood there, amazed.
Eonder gently pried the girlâs arms from his waist. âThere is someone I want you to meet.â He turned the girl around to face Mortimer. âThis is Gwendolyn, my granddaughter.â
Gwendolyn extended her right hand. âHow do you do.â
Mortimer shifted from one foot to the other. âHow⦠what? Um⦠nice to meet you.â He shook her hand as he looked down at his feet.
Gwendolyn stood a little taller than Mortimer, which made him feel short. Her long, blonde hair flowed in waves of curls down her back and seemed to glisten as she stood in front of the fireplace.
The thin white fabric of her dress looked soft to the touch and shimmered in the firelight. Her sleeves reached her wrists, trimmed in a pale green flowing material. A golden sash wrapped around her waist, while a circular pendant hung from a thin strand of gold that lay across her chest.
