Rona tightened the belt on her coat as she scaled the last part of the hill. Taylor had told her that Kai had been keeping himself busy tinkering with the junkers that were stored in the garage. A plume of smoke came up from the chimney so she figured he must still be there.

Soon Marti and Rona’s parents would be arriving and she needed to know where she and Kai stood. No, that was an excuse. She needed to know…what? The relationship hadn’t been real. And yet, being near him, the feelings that erupted when he kissed her, all felt real. How he looked at her. How he touched her. How he made her so angry and yet so happy too. Could Marti be right? Rona had missed the truth because of a dream she could never have.

Of course, this could only be described as fast. Yet, her mom had once told her, “True love has no time frame. It’s a feeling that comes along and sweeps you off your feet before you even know what hit you. You’ll want to deny the emotion because it’s bittersweet, and that’s what separates it from lust.” Rona and Marti’s parents had been married for thirty-five years so they knew a thing or two about lasting love.

Pushing open the metal door, she stepped inside and scanned the space filled with cars—fixer uppers and some antiques. Fans whirled from metal beams and a pot belly stove crackled and popped from the corner. She could feel the heat of the flame and she crossed the space to warm her hands in front of the fire. The smell of grease and dust hung in the air.

Hearing a clanking sound from the back of the garage she rounded the corner and came to a sudden stop when she saw Kai tucked up under the hood of an old green Mustang that had large patches of rust on its body. He wore those same faded, fringed jeans that settled dangerously low on his hips. The torn pockets cradled his firm bottom. Cranking noises brought her attention on his bare, sinewy upper body. As he moved toned, rope-like muscles flexed in his arms and broad back, his skin glistening under the strong overhead work light. She couldn’t think of a better description for him than beautiful. At some point she had compared him and Stone and that seemed ridiculous now. They were worlds apart, in looks and character. Stone with his perfect bone structure and flawless body were pleasing to the eye, and his international endeavors made him a man of mystery. How silly she’d been not to see Kai’s mystery too. He had perfect flaws. His nose remained crooked from where it must have been broken at some point. He had a deep cleft in his chin that some wouldn’t consider sexy, but she did. Even the scars on his skin were a roadmap that she wanted to explore.

A heat built between her inner thighs.
