BROCK BLINKED at Deputy Metcalf. “Horseback?”

“Sure.” The deputy smiled at him. “Don’t tell me with all the wild animals you deal with every day that you don’t ride.”

“It’s not that.” Brock studied the three horses standing tied to the white horse trailer. “It’s just been a few years. Don’t we risk riding right past evidence? I’ve always done extensive searches on foot before.”

“We’re heading south of the beaver pond,” Tiffany said as she swung into the saddle of a dark gray gelding. “Hopefully we’ll find something useful upstream. The rest of the team is going to go over everything from here to the beaver pond, areas where we know there’s been activity.”

“Sounds reasonable.” Brock studied the quiet-looking bay Metcalf handed him the reins to. The horse looked like it had more than a few miles on him. I hope he’s as mellow as he looks. It’s been way too long since I’ve been in the saddle.

Before Brock could remember all the details he needed to check before getting on, Metcalf moved efficiently around the animal checking saddle, headstall, and reins. “Everything looks good. Come on, the sooner we get going, the sooner we get back.”

“Thanks.” Brock grabbed the saddle horn and swung up. It took him a second to find the right stirrup, and the horse looked back at him with concern in his tired brown eyes. “It’ll be okay.” Brock patted the horse’s neck. “Just give me a couple of minutes to find my seat.”

Metcalf’s weather-beaten face split in a rare grin. “A couple of minutes? Summers, we’re riding.” He kicked his horse and it took off.

Tiffany followed suit, and there was nothing Brock could do but mirror their actions and hold on as his horse took off at an ever-increasing pace until they were racing up the valley faster than Brock figured his horse could go.
