“Do I have to remind you that we want her on our side?”

I leaned back on the thin foam mattress that was my bed and regarded Ward, who stood across from me, his hands on his hips.

“I was too hard on the poor little thing?”

“Ya think?”

I sucked in a lungful of smoke and wished it were something harder. I blew it out, enjoying the way Ward grimaced.

He sighed. “Mina’s a real sweet kid.”

“Yeah?” I frowned, knowing I’d probably gone too far with her but not wanting to back down yet and admit it. “Well, she’d better toughen up if she wants to work in forensic science. I think I was a gentleman compared to some of the serious freaks she’ll have to deal with. She has to get used to the harsh realities of the world. I was only trying to help her,” I said, smiling. “Mentor her a bit.”

“It was her first interview, for Christ’s sake. I told you that. I told you to be a good boy. She had a little cry in the stairwell afterwards.”

I shook my head even as part of me felt pleased with my success. Appealing to her self-image was a way to bring her down a few pegs but maybe I succeeded too well. I didn’t want to drive her away. Hell, I wanted her to be attracted to me. To desire me.

“You never told me she was so fucking hot. A bit of a head’s up might have been in order.”

“She’s sweet looking,” Wells said and nodded. “But she’s not what you think. She’s good, Michael.”

I looked up at him. “No one’s truly good.”

“She is. Man to man?” Ward said and went to the door. “She might just be your salvation. She’s really smart. Don’t let her looks fool you. You might want to cultivate a friendship with her instead of destroying her self-esteem. You know, crushing all her hopes like you did back there?”

“I don’t want a fucking friendship with her. I want her to fix me.”

“Catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

I waved him away. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll be a good boy next time.”

“I don’t know if she’ll want to interview you after this.”

“She will, believe me. I know her, maybe better than you think. I know what motivates her.” I crushed the cigarette out and leaned back against the padded wall. “She’ll be back. She’s so fascinated with me, she’ll put up with any abuse I might throw her way.”

“Why do you have to throw abuse her way in the first place? She’s a nice kid.”

I shrugged. “I’m used to the company of men who can take a hit and keep on fighting. I don’t like to have to reign myself in. If she wants my case, she’ll have to tolerate me.”

Ward threw his hands up. “She’s scheduled for another interview in three days. I hope you’ll work on your game face before then. That is, if she decides to come back.”

“She’ll be back.”

Ward left the room, leaving me alone to contemplate my tactics with Dr.
