Later in the evening, Ember sat at the bar and tabulated the tips for the day. They were closing in about thirty minutes, and she wasn’t really expecting a customer this late on a weeknight.

Someone did come in, though. Hearing the door, Ember neatly put away the cash and walked behind the counter. Ember was about to ask the man what she could get for him when she realized that it was none other than John Bailey, Natalie’s ex.

John was clearly upset about something. He got straight to the point.

“Did you visit my mother?”

“What?” Ember asked, trying her best to look genuinely confused. “Why would I visit your mother?”

“Because,” John said, a vein near his temple pulsing, “she said she had a strange visitor that sounded an awful lot like you.”

“Look, John,” Ember replied. She was happy to have the bar between her and John this time. “I don’t know what idea you have in your head, but I never saw your mother. I don’t even know who your mom is.”

John clearly didn’t believe Ember, but he didn’t want a repeat of the incident at Natalie’s house.

“Just stay away from her, okay?” John said threateningly.

“I’ll try,” Ember said, shrugging, “but it’ll be hard. Like I said, I don’t know who your mother is.”

Angry at Ember’s laissez-faire attitude, John slammed a fist on the bar counter hard enough to shake the glasses at the other end.

“Stay away from my mother,” he repeated, “or else.” With that, John stormed out of the Broken Broom.

Ember stood in stunned silence. She could understand why Natalie had left her husband.
