Chapter 9
Stokes? How was Stokes a ghost? Not just Stokes, but young Stokes. I stole a glance at Granny but I couldnât read the expression on her face.
âWhat caused the equipment to fall over?â Eve asked. So they hadnât seen any of the ghosts then.
âIâm not sure. But thatâs another weird thing. When Paulie went to the room this morning, everything was normal. The equipment was set up just like it was supposed to be.â
âWas anyone with him? With Paulie?â Carver asked.
âI was.â April raised her hand timidly. âAnd yeah, everything looked normal except Doug was gone. Well, and the screen was all black on the laptop that was in the room. Like someone had shut it off or something.â
âIt wasnât that laptop?â I asked.
E.J. shook his head. âNo. Iâve got it set up so we donât have to rely on everything being saved on a single device. It all streams somewhere else and then I can access it anywhere. That laptop and most of the surveillance equipment is trashed though.â
I needed to let Carver know what Iâd seen, but I would have to wait until the Supernatural Sleuths had left. I looked at him, hoping he could read my face, and he gave me a slight nod to indicate that he understood.
âI donât mean to be rude here,â I glanced at Peaches before I continued, âbut Iâm having a hard time understanding why you came here. Why didnât you take this straight to the police?â
E.J. let out a deep breath. âLook, all of this⦠supernatural stuffâI donât know if itâs real or not. I donât know if I believe in any of it. But Raven does. And she said the police canât help us with this.â He looked at Carver and added, âNo offense.â
âAfter our conversation today,â Raven leaned around E.J. to look at me, âI know youâre the one who can help us. E.J.âs on the fence, but heâs willing to go along with us if it will help Doug.â
âAnd what about you?â I asked April. She looked surprised that Iâd singled her out.
âI just want Doug back.â Her eyes watered and she twirled a lock of hair around her finger. Even after heâd insulted and rejected her, she still cared about him. I knew the feeling all too well.
âWill you let her help us?â Raven pleaded with Carver.
He glanced at me before he answered. âIâll discuss the case with Ms. Davis and weâll see what we can do.â
âThatâs all we ask.â Raven stood and E.J. and April followed suit.
Eve walked them to the door and I sipped on the sweet tea Peaches had brought me. I waited until the door had closed before I spoke.
âOne of those strange ghosts was there that night. I saw him on the video.â
âDo you think itâs malevolent?â Eve asked.
âNo idea, but it gets weirder. It was Stokes, the handyman, but he was young. In his thirties maybe.â
âHow is that possible?â Eve asked.
I looked at Granny, hoping she might have an answer.
âHeâs not dead.
