Chapter 9

Stokes? How was Stokes a ghost? Not just Stokes, but young Stokes. I stole a glance at Granny but I couldn’t read the expression on her face.

“What caused the equipment to fall over?” Eve asked. So they hadn’t seen any of the ghosts then.

“I’m not sure. But that’s another weird thing. When Paulie went to the room this morning, everything was normal. The equipment was set up just like it was supposed to be.”

“Was anyone with him? With Paulie?” Carver asked.

“I was.” April raised her hand timidly. “And yeah, everything looked normal except Doug was gone. Well, and the screen was all black on the laptop that was in the room. Like someone had shut it off or something.”

“It wasn’t that laptop?” I asked.

E.J. shook his head. “No. I’ve got it set up so we don’t have to rely on everything being saved on a single device. It all streams somewhere else and then I can access it anywhere. That laptop and most of the surveillance equipment is trashed though.”

I needed to let Carver know what I’d seen, but I would have to wait until the Supernatural Sleuths had left. I looked at him, hoping he could read my face, and he gave me a slight nod to indicate that he understood.

“I don’t mean to be rude here,” I glanced at Peaches before I continued, “but I’m having a hard time understanding why you came here. Why didn’t you take this straight to the police?”

E.J. let out a deep breath. “Look, all of this… supernatural stuff—I don’t know if it’s real or not. I don’t know if I believe in any of it. But Raven does. And she said the police can’t help us with this.” He looked at Carver and added, “No offense.”

“After our conversation today,” Raven leaned around E.J. to look at me, “I know you’re the one who can help us. E.J.’s on the fence, but he’s willing to go along with us if it will help Doug.”

“And what about you?” I asked April. She looked surprised that I’d singled her out.

“I just want Doug back.” Her eyes watered and she twirled a lock of hair around her finger. Even after he’d insulted and rejected her, she still cared about him. I knew the feeling all too well.

“Will you let her help us?” Raven pleaded with Carver.

He glanced at me before he answered. “I’ll discuss the case with Ms. Davis and we’ll see what we can do.”

“That’s all we ask.” Raven stood and E.J. and April followed suit.

Eve walked them to the door and I sipped on the sweet tea Peaches had brought me. I waited until the door had closed before I spoke.

“One of those strange ghosts was there that night. I saw him on the video.”

“Do you think it’s malevolent?” Eve asked.

“No idea, but it gets weirder. It was Stokes, the handyman, but he was young. In his thirties maybe.”

“How is that possible?” Eve asked.

I looked at Granny, hoping she might have an answer.

“He’s not dead.
