It took him a moment to realize that the young man tapping his foot against the tile was Kevin. With his people in tow, Sam made a detour and, instead of heading for the Galaxy Room, walked down the wide, crystal-chandeliered hallway toward the boy.

“I got my hair cut.” Kevin sighed. “She thought it was a good idea.”

“She,” Sam understood, meant Tracy. After a quick glance around he located her in one of the hotel’s two beauty salons. “She’s having her toes done,” Kevin explained, though that was obvious.

As the PR people clustered around, Sam put on his best “I’m here to be photographed” face, patted Kevin on the shoulder, and told the group, “This is Kevin Maxwell, my assistant’s son.” Max, who had returned from the task of relocating the sick child and her mother, produced a smile that looked genuine to everyone but Sam and Kevin. “Kevin and his mom haven’t seen each other for a while, so I invited him and his girlfriend to join us here for a couple of days.”

Tracy, who caught the reference to her through the open doorway, perked up and wiggled her fingers at the photographers. “Nice little family you got here, Joe,” quipped one of the crew.

“I hate to travel alone,” Sam quipped back.

Like an amoeba, the group began to inch back down the hall, figuring that, like the other photo ops, this stop was a brief one. Tracy, though she was no longer looking at them, continued to preen, spreading her toes and admiring the new polish.

“Nice tits,” someone murmured.

Sam turned around. It was like being in high school again: every one of the people around him seemed to be completely innocent of making the remark. Then one of the photographers, with the sort of stepped-up (and somewhat liquor-fueled) good cheer Sam had experienced among his brother’s squad in Vietnam, offered him a big “ain’t we good buddies” grin and asked, “So which one of ‘em are you sleeping with, Joe?”

Sam was stunned. Not by the question, but by the gall of the man. “Excuse me?”

Dove didn’t move. Neither did Max. In fact, no one did. The man seemed not to notice that he’d said anything out of line and responded, “Vegas is a lonely town if you don’t have somebody to warm the sheets for you.”

“I like cold sheets,” Sam said.
