Chapter Eight

The General and the Psychic

Man is made by his belief … as he believes, so he is.

Bhagavad Gita

It was only a question of time before Thomaz would be introduced to Brigadier General Alfredo Moacyr Uchoa, retired from a distinguished military career spanning many pursuits. An engineer, Uchoa had been assigned as a young officer to several posts with the engineering corps. Following a period of administrative duties, he became part of a confidential project of the Brazilian Air Force to gather and collate data on the increasing number of UFO sightings. That project was to be only the beginning of his intense interest in UFOs.

Following his discharge from the military, General Uchoa established a university in Brasília, attracting scientists interested in anomalous phenomena as they relate to social issues. Out of this effort came a special team organized by Uchoa to probe the “extra or intraterrestrial objects or sightings.” The author of five books and a number of scientific papers, he is a soft-spoken man who discusses issues in a careful, considered manner. An impish sense of humor punctuates the seriousness of deliberations about “phenomena.” Intellectually, he oscillates comfortably between theories of hyperspace and Walker’s quantum tunneling wave-packet collapse proposal. However, UFO “contacts” most stimulate his scientific curiosity; he sometimes refers to them as a “siren song leading me into the boldest enigma of all.”

The general owns a farm just within the town of Alexania, in the state of Goias, approximately one hundred miles from Brasília. A two-hundred-mile arc north and east of Brasília is the focus of a disproportionately large number of sightings. In 1969, Uchoa and his research team observed several appearances of a “silvery-blue sphere” over Alexania. In every sighting, the “sphere” maneuvered, turned sharply, and disappeared in trajectories that ordinary aircraft were incapable of. Most of the sightings were confirmed independently by townspeople who had no knowledge of the general’s research interests.
