CHAPTER 7

MORE ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES: VIET CONG IMPROVISATION AND TACTICS

OTHER ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES

In addition to the large stocks of M16 mines provided by 1ATF through the Barrier Minefield, the enemy also used other anti-personnel mines. These included booby traps using grenades, mortar shells and other unexploded bombs (UXB), mines of Chinese manufacture and captured or stolen US Claymore mines. They were deployed to protect Viet Cong facilities such as food caches and bunker systems but, like M16 mines, they were also used in nuisance-mining of roadblocks and the approaches to base areas like the Minh Dam Secret Zone.
