FEAR

Many of the stories we tell each other, including the fairy stories we grew up with, revolve around the concept of fear. This universal emotion is caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or is a threat in some form. Fear might stem from an ingrained vulnerability or take you completely by surprise. Its aftermath is often devastating and can leave you feeling helpless in its grip.

Fear can halt your progress, prevent you from making a decision, taking a job, leaving a country or repairing a relationship. Fears are concrete, nebulous, real and imagined. They reside in the past, present and future. As a well-known Buddhist teaching explains, ‘fear x resistance = suffering’.

‘No one ever tells us to stop running away from fear. We are very rarely told to move closer, to just be there, to become familiar with fear… So the next time you encounter fear, consider yourselves lucky. This is where the courage comes in. Usually we think that brave people have no fear. The truth is that they are intimate with fear.’
