Gyndri made his way back to Parvasi Press deep in thought. The business of the Bridge Corporation was carrying information and goods. They’d used that connection to make the Town Run tradition and get every boy on Respite to work for them at least once. He couldn’t see any way that they’d risk developing a reputation for thievery. No one would trust them with a single package after that.

He could have teleported back, but Gyndri wanted to take time to think. He speculated that a thief might have stolen a key to a Bridge office, but the man had gone in too casually, like he wasn’t worried about being found inside. He’d seemed to think he’d escaped, so there was no reason he’d go hide somewhere dangerous.

The cool night air gave Gyndri no answers. Even the physical joy of flight didn’t make him any less disgruntled. A deep dissatisfaction gnawed at him even while he spiraled back down to the door of the press. It just didn’t make any sense!

Piet was in the reception area with Gyndri’s parents, waiting for him. Mama let out a breath of relief when he returned unhurt.

“He got away,” Gyndri reported. “but I saw where he went. It was a Bridge Corporation building. Why would they be stealing?”

Papa frowned. “It’s very odd. I can’t find anything missing. Most of what I keep in this room are recent records, sales information and some designs waiting for approval. Just documents, nothing valuable. They’re all still here. I don’t think he touched them.”

Gyndri tilted his head. Piet rubbed his chin. Mama was searching through the desk again to make sure nothing was missing.

“You said another businessman was attacked in his own shop,” Piet suggested. “Maybe he was trying to frighten you?”

Papa’s face drew into a scowl. “This neighborhood has grown frightening enough.”

Gyndri shook his head. “If he was trying to scare us, he wouldn’t have been trying to be quiet. You can’t scare someone if they don’t know you’re there.”

“Maybe he was going to hide and wait?” Piet tried, but Papa just gestured with an open hand around the room.

“Where could a man hide in here?” he asked. “There are boxes and shelves and parts in the pressroom, but nothing here to cover him. And what would he do, jump out and say ‘Boo?’ ”

Mama finished her review of the desk, closing the last drawer. “Maybe he wanted to find out what a wizard was doing at a printer’s shop. He would have been looking for an order placed today. He didn’t take anything because he didn’t find what he was looking for.”

There was a momentary contemplative silence. “The timing is right,” Gyndri agreed, “But what could Bridge think I was doing that was worth risking their reputation for?”

“Or me,” pointed out Piet. “Maybe they did something criminal in the past, and think I might have found evidence of it in my history studies.
