Chapter Eleven
Thankful for her day off, Nessa puttered around the house. Sheâd already had her coffee, cleaned her bedroom, did laundry, and was about to start dusting the rest of the upstairs when Clint arrived. He would be working on the patio area that day, and Nessa was excited to have him there. Not only because heâd be getting more work done, but because she wanted to talk to him about Laverne.
âHey,â Clint said, coming inside. âAre you off today?â
âYeah, but if I get in your way at all, feel free to let me know.â
âUnless youâre planning on going swimming, I think youâll be fine,â Clint joked.
âI think Iâll pass.â Nessa laughed. âIâll be opening the pool before I know it, but itâs still too cold.â
Clint got to work right away, and Nessa finished dusting. She looked around her kitchen to see what she needed to buy at the grocery store when Clint came in through the patio door. âDo you think I could have some water? I forgot my cooler at home.â
Nessa invited him in, got him some water and a couple of sports drinks, and offered him a sandwich. As they ate, she decided to bring up Laverne.
âWith everything going on lately, I have to ask. Did you ever meet Laverne?â
Clint nodded and finished chewing. âTwice. I met her the day I told you I got the job at the house, and then I went again the next day.â
âHow come?â Nessa asked.
âI went the first day so she could meet me, and I went again for Mavery. I guess either Laverne or Renata hired Rangerâs company to do some cleaning, and it was the first time Mavery would be on the job. She was so nervous about meeting Laverne after all the stories sheâd heard about her. When I told her that I went there the day before, she asked for tips. I offered to go with her instead. I figured if Laverne gave us a hard time, I could act like I was there for my own work stuff and not there to support Mavery.â
âHow come Ranger didnât go with her?â Nessa knew the answer already since heâd been at the bakery but didnât think Clint knew that.
âHe wanted to get some gift for Laverne or whatever. I donât know why, but people acted so weirdly around her.â
âWhat was she like?â Nessa asked. âIâve heard stories, too. Was she nice to you?â
âShe didnât yell at me or anything if thatâs what you mean. She was short with her words and rather blunt. She spent more time talking about her cable box than anything else. She wanted it to record five shows at once, but it only recorded three.â
Nessa thought back to the letter from Bizzie and how Samson said something about Cody being a cable guy who had previous issues with Laverne.
âThatâs a lot of shows to record at once.â
âYeah, and she asked me for help, but I donât know anything about cable. I donât even have cable at my house.
