Final Revisions

By this stage, work was already well advanced on the W140’s replacement. Nevertheless, there were still changes in the pipeline, and there was a major one in June 1996 when a new diesel model was introduced. This time it was not only for North America, and although no examples of the new S 300 Turbodiesel were brought into the UK, it was intended for sale in continental Europe.

The new 6-cylinder engine in the S 300 Turbodiesel brought more refinement as well as more performance. The underbonnet layout was neater, too.

Resistance to diesel engines in the luxury car market had begun to crumble, not least under the impact of superbly refined diesel engines from BMW. Once again obliged to play catch-up, Mercedes had been working for some time on a new range of modular diesel engines which they intended should boast class-leading refinement and reclaim the initiative from BMW.
